Finding the Most Appropriate Kitchen Tables and Chairs Will Enhance the Look of Your Kitchen

Understandably, when we first design our kitchens, most of our attention is focused on the decor and the appliances. But we should not take kitchen tables and chairs for granted. While kitchen tables and chairs might seem like purely functional pieces, choosing the right style will greatly add to the kitchen’s overall look. The tables and chairs you pick might even end up dictating the decor of the rest of the kitchen. Small kitchen tables and chairs can have carvings or colors that dictate what we do with the rest of the room in terms of decorations or color schemes.

The first consideration is picking tables and chairs for the kitchen, however, should be the size of the room. If your kitchen is small, for example, don’t pick chairs and tables that are too large; narrow, high-backed chairs will help you maximize kitchen space. To further save space in a cramped kitchen, pick chairs that can be pushed into the table. When measuring for any kind of dining table and chairs you need to also take into account that you will need room to pull the chairs out while sitting and getting up from the table.

Then, decide what style you want the pieces to be. Look at your kitchen’s decor and think about what tables and chairs would work best with it. Or you can go in the opposite direction and pick a set that stands out, in order to give your kitchen a strong focal point where the eye will be drawn.

Style considerations also dictate what kind of material you want your chairs and tables to be. Although most furniture for the kitchen is made of wood, tables and chairs can also be made from metal or plastic, and even a mixture of materials, such as a metal table with a glass top. You might even be interested in something unusual like ghost chairs. While tables and chairs should commonly be of the same material, you can mix and match different materials if you have a good eye for style.

But always keep practicality in mind when selecting pieces for the kitchen. While the chairs you are considering may look stylish, are they comfortable? Remember that you will want to spend a lot of time sitting on them, so make comfort a priority if you want your kitchen to be a place where your family hangs out. Are they durable? While you may think you are saving money by buying cheaper tables and chairs, in the long run you will save more if you invest in quality furniture. Keep in mind that the tables and chairs will undergo a lot of wear and tear, particularly if you have young children in the family. And if you have elderly family members, you should pick chairs that are sturdy so they can steady themselves when getting up or sitting down.

If you already have a kitchen table and chairs, there are many ways you can dress them up so they work better with the rest of the kitchen. One option is to refurbish the pieces by painting or reupholstering the chairs. Painting the furniture the right color can really enhance the look of your kitchen, either by coordinating with the other accessories and furniture or by providing a contrast. But even a coat of varnish can give the pieces shiny finishes that will make them look like new. Another alternative is to add a table cloth or skirt to the table. While fabric table cloths may be impractical for daily use, they can make your table look festive for special occasions; accessories such as candlesticks, vases and placemats can enhance the look of the tablecloth further. Stain-resistant vinyl tablecloths that are easy to clean and maintain, however, may be a better choice for regular days.
