Choosing the Right Kitchen Tables and Chairs Will Enhance the Look of Your Kitchen

When we are planning our kitchens, we pay most of our attention to the appliances and the decor, and rightly so. Kitchen tables and chairs, however, should not be taken for granted. While chairs and tables are the most functional pieces in the kitchen, the right style can greatly enhance the overall look of the kitchen. The tables and chairs you pick might even end up dictating the decor of the rest of the kitchen. Round kitchen table and chairs can have carvings or colors that dictate what we do with the rest of the room in terms of decorations or color schemes.

The size of the kitchen should be the main consideration in selecting chairs and tables for the room. If your kitchen is small, for example, don’t pick chairs and tables that are too large; narrow, high-backed chairs will help you maximize kitchen space. To further save space in a cramped kitchen, pick chairs that can be pushed into the table. When measuring for any kind of dining table and chairs you need to also take into account that you will need room to pull the chairs out while sitting and getting up from the table.

Then, decide what style you want the pieces to be. Look at your kitchen’s decor and think about what tables and chairs would work best with it. Or, you can pick a set that stands out against the décor, to create a strong focal point to which your guests’ eyes will be drawn.

Deciding what materials your kitchen tables and chairs should be made of is another style consideration. While kitchen furniture is commonly made of wood, tables and chairs can also be made of plastic, metal or a combination of other materials, such as a metal table with a glass top. You might even be interested in something unusual like ghost acrylic chairs. As a general rule, tables and chairs should be made of the same material; however, if you have a good eye for style, you can mix and match pieces of different materials.

But always keep practicality in mind when selecting pieces for the kitchen. While the chairs you are considering may look stylish, are they comfortable? If you want your kitchen to be a welcoming place where your family hangs out, comfort should be a major priority since you will likely want to spend a lot of time sitting on the chairs. Are they durable? While it is tempting to scrimp by buying cheaper tables and chairs, you will save more in the long run if you invest on quality furniture. Keep in mind that the tables and chairs will undergo a lot of wear and tear, particularly if you have young children in the family. And if you have elderly family members, you should pick chairs that are sturdy so they can steady themselves when getting up or sitting down.

If you already have a kitchen table and chairs, there are many ways you can dress them up so they work better with the rest of the kitchen. For example, you can refurbish the tables and chairs by painting or reupholstering them. You can really enhance the look of your kitchen if you paint kitchen tables and chairs the right color, either through contrast or by coordinating the pieces with the other furniture and accessories in the room. You can also make the pieces look like new with a shiny coat of varnish. Finally, you can dress up tables by adding table cloths or skirts. Fabric table cloths may not be practical for everyday use, but for special occasions they can make your table look festive; table cloths can be enhanced further with accessories such as placemats, vases and candlesticks. Stain-resistant vinyl tablecloths that are easy to clean and maintain, however, may be a better choice for regular days.
