Unknown to many, the sturdy and functional little accessories used to keep those books well organized have been around for centuries. Although commonly used by traditional book lovers in this day and age, Kikkerland Decorative Bookends have had their share of gradual historical development.

Books have been in existence since the medieval or dark ages, used by monks in monasteries that had libraries of literature. Book support did not come into being until the latter part of the Renaissance when shelves became practical as books accumulated and libraries became more crowded.

Originally, books were stacked horizontally within the study area or room and were eventually determined to be a safety hazard. When someone tried to pull out a book from somewhere in the middle of an otherwise tall stack, this placed at risk the entire pile of books to come cascading down.
